Kanipahow Wilderness Resort & Outposts is located in a remote area of North Eastern Ontario 3.5 hours North of the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan border and 9.5 hours North of the Buffalo, New York border.
DIRECTIONS
Coming from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan border crossing
Once you cross the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario you will have three options to choose from. They are listed in no particular order.
Option 1 – Sault Ste. Marie (SSM) to Chapleau via Wawa (375km/235miles @ 4.5 hrs)
From SSM follow the signs to Highway 17 West to Wawa (229km/142miles)
From Wawa take 101 East to Chapleau (128km/79.5miles)
Turn left onto 101 East/129 North (signs for Chapleau/Timmins 6km/3.7miles)
Turn right onto 101 East toward Timmins (10km/6miles)
Turn left onto Kanipahow Road (3km/1.8miles) follow the sign Kanipahow Wilderness Resort
This route is the longest (372km/230miles) but if you have the time you have the beautiful vistas of the Northshore of Lake Superior as you climb up and onto the Canadian Shield. Lots of hills along the Lake and takes about 4.5 hours. This route has the best overall road conditions.
Option 2 – Sault Ste. Marie (SSM) to Chapleau via Thessalon (315km/195miles @ 3.5 hrs)
From SSM follow signs to Highway 17 East to Thessalon (90km/55miles)
From Thessalon take highway 129 North to Chapleau (224km/140miles)
Turn right onto 101 East/129 North (signs for Chapleau/Timmins 6km/3.7miles)
Turn right onto 101 East toward Timmins (10km/6miles)
Turn left onto Kanipahow Road (3km/1.8miles) follow the sign Kanipahow Wilderness Resort
This route is the most commonly used (314km/195miles). It is very scenic as you travel along the North Channel of Lake Huron and turn up highway 129 north towards Chapleau along the mighty Mississagi River. The abundant wildlife. winding road and climb up the south side of the Canadian Shield always make this an interesting ride. For those going to one of our Outposts you may want to consider this option or the next. This is about a 3.5 hour trip and the general state of the road is fair to good.
Option 3 – Sault Ste. Marie (SSM) to Chapleau via Heyden/556 (250km/155 miles @ 2.75 hrs)
From SSM follow the signs to Highway 17 West to Heyden/556 Junction (18km/11miles)
From Junction take Highway 556 to 129 Junction (105km/65miles)
From Junction take 129 North to Chapleau (129km/80miles)
Turn left onto 101 East/129 North (signs for Chapleau/Timmins 6km/3.7miles)
Turn right onto 101 East toward Timmins (10km/6miles)
Turn left onto Kanipahow Road (3km/1.8miles) follow the sign Kanipahow Wilderness Resort
This route is for those that are familiar with ‘Hauling’ roads and want to spend less time driving. It is the shortest (252km/156miles) and the most adventuresome. The drive along secondary Highway 556 is gravel top for much of its length but is regularly maintaine. For those coming up in a truck or SUV you may want to inquire with us about the road conditions prior to leaving, it could save yourself an additional hour of driving.

Option 1 – Sudbury to Chapleau via 144N/Timmins (425km/265miles @ 5 hrs)
From Sudbury take Highway 144 North (Timmins) to 144N/101 Junction (178km/110miles)
From Junction take 101 West to Chapleau (172km/107miles)
At the “kilometer/marker 145” turn left onto Kanipahow Road (3km/1.8miles) follow the sign Kanipahow Wilderness Resort
Option 2 – Sudbury to Chapleau via Thessalon (410km/275miles @ 4.5 hrs)
From Sudbury take Highway 17 West to Thessalon/129 Junction (219km/136miles)
From Junction take Highway 129 North to Chapleau (225km/140miles)
Turn right onto 101 East/129 North (signs for Chapleau/Timmins 6km/3.7miles)
Turn right onto 101 East toward Timmins (10km/6miles)

Option 3 – Sudbury to Chapleau via Sultan (300km/185miles @ 3.5 hrs)
From Sudbury take Highway 144 North to 560/Sultan Industrial Rd Junction (129km/80miles)
From Junction take Sultan Industrial Rd all the way across to 667 Junction (90km/55miles)
From Junction take 667 West to 667W/129 Junction (35km/21miles)
From Junction take 129 North to Chapleau (30km/18miles)
